Calories in vs. calories out, increase levels of activity – we all know the actions required to lose weight. Just one small problem then; losing weight also requires willpower to cope with the overwhelming, constant state of hunger! That’s where brand new weight-loss gadget Food Watcher comes in.

First, here’s the science bit – the vagus nerve makes the neuro-electrical connections between the brain and the stomach and thus tells our brain when our stomach is hungry – in simple terms it gives us an appetite. It has been suggested that Transcutaneous electrical pulses are able to interfere with this process by blocking the messages carried by the nerves. Our stomach can’t get the message through to the brain that we might just fancy some cheese.

The Food Watcher is a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator, designed and tested to inhibit the sensation of hunger. It generates safe TENS-like pulses applied transcutaneously to the ear ducts and has been proven to reduce the desire to eat. This in turn causes us to lose weight.

Food Watcher isn’t a miracle machine which once switched on will allow you to eat a Big Mac whilst it makes the calories disappear. It can however reduce the sensation of hunger in people who want to lose weight, giving them the best chance of success. A calorie controlled diet, exercise and a dash of willpower and the pounds could start to drop off.

Like so many young mothers Carmel Walter had never had an issue with her weight until she had her first child. At 6ft 1’ she had been a healthy size 14 with plenty of energy even after a day at work.

“After I had Harvey I realised I had put on nearly 4 stone but I was so busy with taking care of him that there never seemed to be time to think about healthy eating and at the end of the day I was just exhausted and slumped on the sofa for a takeaway or snack. Snacking was my downfall, a packet of crisps or biscuits were never far away and I ate throughout the day as well as eating two main meals but I never ate breakfast because I was always rushing to go to work.”

Carmel did occasionally try to lose weight, joining slimming clubs and having half hearted attempts at eating healthily but they always failed. By now Harvey was 4 and enjoyable clothes shopping trips were a thing of the past.

When a friend recommended Food Watcher Carmel was initially hugely cynical. ‘I couldn’t see how a gadget would help me lose weight. Nevertheless she started to use Food Watcher every time she wanted a snack and found that the cravings subsided. ‘Without really noticing or trying I found that I stopped eating snacks and in the first fortnight lost half a stone, by the end of the month I had lost a stone. I also found that my tastes changed I could no longer stomach anything fatty – sausage roll treats from Greggs were a thing of the past, where I would previously eat handfuls of sugary sweets now I didn’t want even one. I know that with Food Watcher my eating is under control.”
